Computers in EAP: trends and issues

English as a Foreign or Second Language (EFL or ESL) has played a significant role in the development of computers in language learning and teaching (Chapelle, 2000; Warschauer and Kern, 2000; Cameron, 1999; Egbert and Hanson-Smith,1999; and Debeski and Levy, 1999) and much of this work is conducted within English for Academic Purposes (EAP) in universities or Higher Education Institutions (HEIs). This paper begins by reporting on a UK-based study (Jarvis, forthcoming), which examined the ways in which computers are being used, as a pedagogical tool, to supplement the delivery of EFL courses. The study identifies a number of clear trends and raises some significant issues for EAP practitioners; these are discussed in the second part of this paper.
