Kids Engaged in Learning

As younger and younger learners in the Middle East are introduced to English, teachers confront the challenge daily to engage then reengage these young learners during English class. These very young learners will thrive when developmentally appropriate English instruction fills the classroom. This presentation describes a framework to guide English instruction for young learners.

Bio

Janet Orr is chair-elect of TESOL's Elementary Education Interest Section. She has extensive experience in program management, second and foreign language acquisition as well as student assessment and program evaluation. She trained teachers in both undergraduate and graduate programs at the University of Colorado at Denver, Ohio University, the University of Botswana and George Mason University. Her English as a foreign language methodology book, Growing Up with English embodies her interests in primary school curriculum and instructional methodology. In addition, she has served as an education expert in Egypt, Tanzania, Jordan, Brazil, Uruguay, Lithuania, Botswana, Swaziland, Israel, Zambia and China. She holds a B.S. from University of Colorado, a M.Ed. from the University of Illinois and an Elementary School Principal Certificate from the University of Virginia.
